University of Cha – Opening Ceremony

University of Cha Opening Ceremony – 15th October, 2011

University of Cha is established to spread and share the knowledge of cha (tea). Anybody can join our university as long as you have the passion to learn everything about tea! Our campuses are tea plantations and we are inviting anybody who is knowledgeable about tea to sign up as a tea at our university.

Entering University of Cha is simple. There’s no entrance examination and there’s no entrance fee. Our best students are those who keep learning

To commemorate University of Cha’s first lecture, we began with a chapter on “Immersing oneself in Tea”

Today’s lesson content:

  • Houjicha: roasting and tasting
  • Matcha: Grinding tea leaves using stone mill and tea ceremony performances
  • Sencha: Green tea preparation

Students tried roasting houjicha using houroku (a tea ware for roasting houjicha). Our instructor was Inoue sensei who designed Obubu’s houroku.

After that, Obubu’s president Akky sensei taught students how tea leaves are grown and harvested. Students toured our tea plantations with Akky sensei.

To our first batch of students – What was new that you learned today?

From now on, we would like to continue to devote our best to make this place one where many students will see as a place to Study Tea.

Today is the start of our endeavors to make this place a place to Study Tea for many students. Let’s make it happen together!
