Introduction
Hello, my name is David and I am intern #234 and my project was to design brewing cards and a menu for Obubu’s cafe.
Why
Prior to coming to Obubu, I had just finished up my third year at the University of Washington where I studied Human-Centered Design and Engineering. There, I learned about different aspects of design when it comes to user experiences, interfaces, and graphic design. With these skills, I wanted to apply them to my intern project. After some discussion with staff at Obubu, I teamed up with senior assistant manager Tran for this project.
Process
Before starting any work for this project, I wanted to gain a better understanding of the needs and wants Tran had envisioned for this project. Tran is part of the staff that overlooks the cafe, so she has an inside perspective of what the cafe needs to continue serving food and drinks to guests at Obubu.
Our first meeting laid down the groundwork for what this project would look like.

After taking deliberate notes, I created the first prototype of the brewing cards and menu.

While lacking in certain aspects, this prototype gave me a solid vision of the brewing cards and menu and what my next steps could look like.
The brewing cards and menu took many shapes throughout my time in this internship.

There were many meetings between me and Tran, where we went back and forth on design choices to ensure everything was how we envisioned it.
In the end, we landed on a version of the brewing cards that provided an ample amount of information in the smallest possible medium. The menu remained relatively unchanged, barring minor changes to ensure the legibility of the menu.

Moving Forward
With time constraints and other limitations, I was unable to meet every goalpost with this project. Moving forward however, I suggest continuous revisions of the brewing cards and menu. The cafe is constantly changing and evolving to better serve our guests, which means that food and drink options will change too. I would also consider creating a larger version of the menu that could live in the cafe for guests to see, rather than a menu that you would hand out.
